STAINLESS STEELS
Stainless steels; are alloy steels with high corrosion resistance that contain at least 10.5-11% chromium (Cr) and maximum 1.2% carbon (C) in their composition. Chromium and passivation rates determine the corrosion and rust resistance of these materials.
The chromium-rich oxide layer resulted from the combination of components like chromium (Cr), silicon (Si) and aluminum (Al) on the surface with oxygen provides the resistance of stainless steel to corrosive elements. Thanks to this very thin amorphous layer, stainless steels act passively against chemical reactions and get resistance to corrosion in non-reducing environments.
Less-alloyed types of the stainless steels are resistant to atmospheric corrosion, while high-alloyed types are resistant to acid, alkaline solutions and environments containing chloride. Stainless steels could be easily formed by cutting, welding, hot & cold forming and machining processes. The capability of getting cleaned easily makes these materials widely used in hospitals, kitchens, and food & pharmaceutical industries. Since they are made of durable materials, stainless steels increase the life of the produced parts and provide them with more economic efficiency.
Types of Stainless Steels:
- Chromium Steels: Corrosion resistance depends on the amount of chromium.
- Chromium-Nickel Steels: They contain 0.05-0.2% nickel and 0.02-0.16% carbon. The corrosion resistance increases with the addition of nickel.
- Chromium-Manganese Steels: They could be used in special situations (high temperature etc.) along with using chrome-nickel steels..
- Multiphase steels
303, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 420 are some examples of stainless steel types. They could be produced in standard lengths of 3-6 meter and special sizes in accordance with TS EN 10278 Dimensions & Tolerances Standard.
